Now in my second semester of teaching Social Media Marketing to local businesses, non-profit organizations, and enthusiasts, I’m encouraged to share the experience.
Last year, with the support of Triton College’s School of Continuing Education, we embarked on a mission to educate local business owners on the What’s, Why’s, and How’s of social media. A simple proposal to have one introduction course summarizing social media marketing quickly turned into a full certificate program, including courses on Social Media Advertising, Management, Online Visibility, and related topics.
The framework of these courses was inspired by Shama Kabani’s The Zen of Social Media Marketing: An Easier Way to Build Credibility, Generate Buzz, and Increase Revenue (available at Amazon.com). Trust me…it’s not easy to find a hard-copy book relevant to the always changing landscape that is social networking. Recognizing that we are becoming more dependent on eBooks and blogs for quick, bullet-point focused learning (insert irony here), I felt it was just as important to recognize the needs of a diverse population of students and offer multiple avenues for accessing the material. For some, it’s shocking enough having to rely solely on a Facebook Group for class announcements and notes.

As we continue to guide local entrepreneurs and explore new opportunities within social media and advertising, my hope is to document our experience over a lecture series of blogs. Including in these posts will be Tips, Tutorials, News and Announcements, and general Stories related to the topics discussed.
